Friday Night Lights: Football & Representation

Those who know me, know I love football season. The welcome entrance of the cool, crisp Fall air. The smell of food grilling. The energy of an entire community concentrated in one stadium seemingly in the middle of nowhere.

In House District 157 and all across the South, Friday nights are the culmination of a long week of work. We work hard in our fields, our shops, our classrooms, and our offices. But when the sun goes down on Friday, we gather. We sit on metal bleachers, we catch up with neighbors we haven’t seen since last week, and we cheer on our kids.

For me, this field on Battle Creek in Tattnall County is a constant reminder of why I’m running for State House.

Deep Roots on Battle Creek

I grew up on these fields. Many of the same fans cheered for me when I was running out of the locker room years ago. It is crazy to think I played on the same field many moons ago. Now, watching the next generation take the turf is a feeling that is hard to put into words.

This season, the player pictured on the field is my son, starting at quarterback for the Warriors. On the sidelines, the cheerleader keeping the spirit alive is my daughter, cheering for the middle school team. Watching them represent our community on the exact same grass where I learned about teamwork, grit, and resilience is a humbling experience. It is a reminder that the work we do today is about building a future for the kids who will succeed us.

High school sports are not just about scores and stats. They are about community character. The bands, the cheerleaders, the booster clubs, and the fans who pack the stands of Battle Creek represent the best of Tattnall County.

A District of Champions

Tattnall County is not alone in this pride. Throughout Georgia House District 157, the same scenes play out every single Friday night.

In Appling County, the community gathers to cheer on the Appling County Pirates in Baxley. In Evans County, the lights shine bright over Claxton High School as the Claxton Tigers take the field. And in Jeff Davis County, the stands are packed with fans rooting for the Jeff Davis Yellowjackets in Hazlehurst.

Each of these schools and communities has its own unique history and rivalries. But they all share a common bond: they are tight-knit, hardworking communities that support their youth and take pride in their home turf.

When you look out at these stadiums, you see what makes Southeast Georgia special. You see people who look out for one another, who celebrate together in victory, and who stand together in defeat. That is the spirit that makes our district strong.

A Representation That Competes

Seeing the dedication of these young athletes and the communities that support them reinforces the central mission of our campaign. Our families deserve representation in Atlanta that competes for them with the same level of intensity, preparation, and passion that these young Warriors show on the field every Friday night.

For too long, our district has suffered from an “Empty Chair” in Atlanta - a representation that does not show up, does not debate, and does not fight for our rural hospitals, our family farms, or our local schools. When our communities are facing rising utility rates, closing healthcare options, and property tax pressures, we cannot afford to sit on the sidelines. We need a representative who will strap on their helmet and get on the field.

We need to compete for the resources our schools deserve, the infrastructure our towns require, and the economic relief our families need.

To all our area schools, football teams, cheerleaders, bands, coaching staffs, and support crews: I pray you have a safe, healthy, and successful season. Thank you for the hours of practice and the dedication you bring to representing our home.
