Micah King's early childhood platform focuses on expanding rural childcare access, funding after-school programs, and supporting working parents across Appling, Evans, Jeff Davis, and Tattnall Counties.

On September 24, 2026, the Georgia Early Education Alliance for Ready Students (GEEARS) published its official 2026 General Election Candidate Guide, profiling legislative candidates across Georgia on early learning, childcare availability, and policies supporting young families.

In the race for Georgia House District 157 - covering Appling, Evans, Jeff Davis, and Tattnall Counties - Democratic nominee Micah King participated in the guide, outlining a comprehensive vision to strengthen rural childcare infrastructure, invest in early learning, and improve work-life balance for Georgia workers.

The full candidate response can be viewed on GEEARS.org.

Balancing Economic Growth with Healthy Families

GEEARS posed the following question to candidates for the Georgia General Assembly:

GEEARS Question: “Georgia is often touted as the best state to do business. How would you ensure that it is also the best place to raise young children?”

Micah King provided the following response:

“Children are our future is not just a line from a famous song. Our future will be in the hands of the children we are raising today. If we want a sustainable, productive future, we have to create it through equitable education opportunities, more access to childcare, and intentionally creating ways for families to spend time together.

Georgia needs more access to after school and out of school programs. We also need more investment in early childhood education. Parents and guardians are a huge part of children’s lives, being a state that’s number 1 to do business sometimes results in horrible work life balance. This creates friction in families.

We need to create opportunities where parents can invest time in their children. With the combination of education opportunities, and family bonding, Georgia will be the best state to raise young children.”

The Reality of Childcare Deserts in Southeast Georgia

For families living in rural communities across District 157, childcare accessibility is not just an educational issue - it is an immediate workforce barrier.

According to research from GEEARS and the Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning (DECAL), rural Southeast Georgia faces severe shortages of licensed infant and toddler care slots:

  • Working parents in rural towns often face long waitlists or must commute dozens of miles outside their home county to secure licensed infant care.
  • Working shifts at regional employers, poultry processors, lumber mills, or emergency service departments frequently conflict with standard daytime preschool hours.
  • High childcare costs consume a disproportionate share of take-home pay for working-class families across Appling, Evans, Jeff Davis, and Tattnall Counties.

King’s platform advocates for state matching grants to help rural community providers open and sustain licensed facilities, expanded tax credits for employers offering childcare assistance, and sustainable funding for local Georgia Pre-K classrooms and after-school programs.

Statewide Transparency and Candidate Participation

Non-partisan voter guides like GEEARS offer voters an objective, side-by-side comparison of where candidates stand on critical quality-of-life issues.

While Micah King submitted detailed answers addressing early learning and family economic stability, Republican nominee Bradley Anderson did not respond to the GEEARS questionnaire, according to the official GEEARS guide.
